The Pfizer Guide to Careers in Pharmacy by Salvator J. Giorgianni
We are living in the most exciting period in the history of pharmaceuticals, as new options lead to new opportunities for those of us in the field and those about to join us. Pharmacists are at a zenith in our ability to manage, cure and prevent diseaseSomewhat new on the horizon is the idea that pharmacists can operate, by
choice, in both a macro- and microcosm.  Pharmacists are responsible not only for the management of medications in a macroscopic sense, that is, globally, but in a microscopic sense as well. Interacting one-on-one with their patients will minimize risks of drug-related problems and maximize therapeutic benefits. We teach patients how to read labels, store their medicines, and safely dispose of expired, unused drugs. We also serve to recognize and prevent adverse medication reactions.

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology by Michael J Groves
Since the publication of the first edition of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology over a decade ago, a not-so-subtle shift in the meaning of the term "biotechnology" has occurred. It has come to mean something very specific, namely the development of drug substances with large protein and polypeptide molecules. These substances can be used as drugs in their own right but may also be used to manipulate cellular DNA in order to produce a required molecule that is believed to have desirable properties in the treatment of a disease. Accordingly, the second edition of this popular text reflects that change of definition by including new material that explores the development of these protein-based therapeutic substances.

*Expanded coverage of the formulation of proteins.
*Additional information on proteins used as drug delivery systems
*Detailed discussion of interactions between proteins and phospholipids
*Increased information on proteomics and gene therapy
*Exploration of pulmonary administration and oral delivery of proteins
A broad review of vaccines
*Discussion of genetic engineering and genomics
*Challenges and issues involved in the development and the production of a drug

Using the Pharmaceutical Literature by Sharon Srodin
The extraordinary advances in digital, medical, and scientific technology over the past decade have had a tremendous impact on the way in which we live and work today. Nowhere is this more evident than in the high tech realm of pharmaceutical research. The completion of the Human Genome Project, the increased speed and power of computers, and the invention of sophisticated laboratory equipment and techniques have opened up new avenues of discovery that are rapidly paving the way toward tomorrow’s blockbuster drugs. Outside the labs, both the Internet and the media have provided consumers and physicians alike with instant access to unprecedented amounts of medical news and information. This not only fuels the demand for better, faster treatments but it also redefines the arena in which companies vie for sales and market share. This fast-paced, competitive environment has changed the way most pharmaceutical companies do business. Alliances with academic institutions and biotechnology firms pump new life into R&D, while at the same time license agreements and mergers offer a quick fix for dwindling pipelines. The regulatory agencies which oversee the industry have also begun implementing new guidelines and modernizing their processes in an effort to keep pace with the needs of the organizations they govern. Innovations such as ePrescribing, extranets, healthcare portals, electronic customer relationship management, and direct-to-consumer advertising have altered the relationship companies have with physicians and other customers, placing great emphasis on the need for timely, accurate information.

World of Microbiology and Immunology (2 Vol. Set) by K. Lee Lerner , Brenda Wilmoth Lerner
Microbiology and immunology are sometimes seen as esoteric and highly specialized sciences with few interpreters to students and the lay public. The authors have selected 600 entries that highlight selected important persons, research facilities, terms, and concepts of both these fields. There are brief biographies of the well known (Salk, Jonas) and the lesser known but important (Mil stein, Cesar); and explanations of common terms (Epidemics and pandemics), uncommon terms (Retroposons and transposable elements), and acronyms like AIDS and SCID (Severe combined immunodeficiency).
The entries are in alphabetical order with many cross references. Though there are no bibliographies with the entries, there are 13 pages of book and journal-article citations and 10 pages of Web addresses in the "Sources Consulted" section. This is followed by an 18-page "Historical Chronology" of milestones in human scientific achievement, showing how ancient (circa 10,000 B.C.E.) ideas eventually led to germ theory and the burgeoning of microbiology and immunology through 2002. The extensive, detailed general index indicates the main entries' volume and page numbers in boldface type. Sometimes the same page information is repeated in regular type, an unnecessary redundancy. Using the index one can find that the Irish potato famine is mentioned in the entry on Fungal genetics along with other similarly embedded bits of information. One important, but missing, finding aid is an index to the biographies, as browsing biographies is often a way to interest students in a discipline. The language is straightforward and only as technical as required.

Microbiological Assay for Pharmaceutical Analysis by Willium Hewitt
A user-friendly guide for the evaluation of microbiological assays, Microbiological Assay for Pharmaceutical Analysis: A Rational Approach provides a lucid explanation of the sources of error in microbiological assay and helps analysts choose efficient assay designs that will minimize those sources of error. Beginning with a review of the theoretical basis for the quantitative aspects, the author discusses microbiological assay as a branch of pharmaceutical analysis and distinguishes it from biological assay in general. He draws attention to the microbiological aspects that may not be so obvious to the chemical analyst and to the analytical aspects that may not be so obvious to the microbiologist.

Stockley's Herbal Medicines Interactions by Williamson, Elizabeth; Driver, Samuel; Baxter, Karen

10th July 2011
Sunday 10:27 PM
Banaras
Hi! just like drug-drug and drug-food interactions, herb drug interactions are very common. Some herbal medicines may cancel the effect of a prescription drug, others may reduce it, or even exaggerate it. Here is a book which has very nicely elaborated the herbal drug interaction. Here are some common example of Herbal Drug Interaction. Enjoy reading it!
Herb Drug Interactions
Dong Quai: taken for menopausal symptom control. Do not mix Dong Quai with warfarin (anticoagulants), St John's Wort and some antibiotics such as sulfonamides, quinolones.
Echinacea: mostly taken as an immune boost to prevent cold and flu. Do not mix Echinacea with some heart medications, antifungal medications, HIV medications and anti-anxiety medications.
Ephedra: A powerful decongestant. Contains ephedrine, which can open up bronchial passages. It's controversial because it's a powerful stimulant that can raise blood pressure, cause insomnia and high blood pressure. Do not mix with heart medications or if you are being treated for high blood pressure, glaucoma or thyroid problems.
Feverfew: taken to reduce the severity of migraines. Do not take with other migraine medications, as, it may raise heart rate and blood pressure. Feverfew has the potential to react with warfarin anti-coagulants, increasing the thinning of blood.
Ginkgo: increases blood flow and circulation throughout the body, can also help improve memory. May interact with anti-coagulant medications such as Aspirin, Coumadin, heparin and warfarin, causing the blood to thin too much, and provoking a serious bleeding disorder. A recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine describes a case of a man who'd been taking Aspirin to prevent a heart attack and had spontaneous bleeding into the eye from the iris within a week of taking a daily dose of ginkgo.
Garlic: is thought to help lower cholesterol and prevent the formation of blood clots that could lead to heart attacks. Garlic capsules may increase blood thinning if you are already on anti-coagulants. Do not take with diabetes medication because it may cause a decrease in blood sugars.
Ginseng: used to help reduce stress, boost energy and improve stamina, and may also help lower cholesterol. Can cause nervousness and excitation, and overuse can lead to headaches, insomnia and heart palpitations. Can increase blood pressure. Should not be used if you are taking prescriptions for high blood pressure or Coumadin.
Hawthorn: claimed to be effective in helping reduce angina attacks by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Should not be taken digoxin, a heart medication. The mix may lower heart rate too much.
Kava: is used to treat anxiety. It's also used to relieve insomnia and nervousness. Do not take Kava if you have a history of liver problems. Also do not mix with antidepressants, sedatives, and do not mix Kava with alcohol.
Licorice: used to treat coughs, colds and peptic ulcers. High doses can lead to increased blood pressure, water retention and potassium loss. Do not use with diuretics or digoxin because it could lead to further loss of potassium, essential for heart function.
St. John's Wort: a natural anti-depressant for mild to moderate depression. Do not take with other anti-depressants, HIV medications, oral contraceptives, some heart/blood thinning medications and Tamoxifen (a cancer drug).
Valerian: a mild sedative with hypnotic effects, used to promote sleep, Should not be taken with alcohol or Valium (Diazapam)

Stockley's Herbal Medicines Interactions by Williamson, Elizabeth; Driver, Samuel; Baxter, Karen
This is a professional level major reference work containing information, in A-Z format, on herb-drug, herb-supplement, herb -food and herb-laboratory test interactions; all of which is data referenced. Commercial herbal medicinal products are increasingly consumed on a regular basis by people in the developed world. Often such products are taken concurrently with conventional medicines, frequently without the knowledge of health care professionals. As more evidence has become available, there has been an increasing awareness of the potential and actual problems of interactions, often dangerous, between conventional medicines and herbal medicines. This proposed new major reference brings together available data on approximately 200 of the most commonly used herbal medicines in highly structured, rigorously scientific monographs. Although our texts on herbal medicines and drug interactions include the major well-known interactions, this text is able to treat the subject in considerably more detail.

Sunday 03:10 PM
Banaras
In the Newly Independent States (NIS) and Countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE), consumers often favour herbal products. In order to meet demands of NIS countries to regulate herbal medicines and ensure their safety, efficacy and quality, WHO has provided technical guidance and worked with the national health authorities of interested NIS and CCEE to develop their own sub-regional monographs on commonly-used medicinal plants.
Download Link: http://depositfiles.com/files/52laoebba

WHO Monographs on Medicinal Plants Commonly Used in the Newly Independent States (NIS)
The NIS monographs provide comprehensive scientific information on the safety, efficacy and quality of the most commonly-used medicinal plants in the NIS. These NIS monographs employ the same format as the WHO monographs on medicinal plants.
This publication includes 30 monographs, which were formulated through the two following mechanisms:

*development of 13 new monographs to address unique medicinal plants commonly used in the NIS;
*adoption of 17 existing monographs from the four volumes of WHO monographs on selected medicinal plants, which are identified as the most widely/commonly used in the NIS.

The monographs may serve as an authoritative source of information for national drug regulatory authorities, since they have been fully involved in the development of the monographs. However, it should also be emphasized that the descriptions included in the section on medicinal uses should not be taken as implying WHO’s official endorsement or approval, nor are they intended to replace any national monographs or national pharmacopoeia of medicinal plants. They merely represent the systematic collection of scientific information available at the time of preparation, for the purpose of information exchange.
